That’s a major reason the Martin GPCE Black Walnut Ambertone is such a wonderful value — it uses solid tonewoods that typically aren’t found on guitars in this price range. The top is solid Sitka spruce, a choice wood for organic, well-balanced tones. The back and sides are made from solid black walnut, which is a unique-looking tonewood somewhere between maple and rosewood in tonality, with a high-frequency clarity similar to koa. It’s a recipe for vibrant tone that will age gracefully as the years go by.

Outstanding tone and playability

The GPCE Black Walnut Ambertone delivers outstanding tone and playability, along with classic Martin visuals. The top is braced with solid Sitka spruce using Martin’s forward-shifted X-bracing pattern for maximum resonance and projection. The GPCE features a smooth-playing, modified low oval neck, and the belly bridge and fingerboard are made of FSC-certified Richlite, an ultra-stable (and sustainable) material with a similar look, feel, and sound to ebony. Traditional Martin craftsmanship makes the GPCE Black Walnut an excellent value.

Martin and Fishman have been working together for over 30 years in an effort to build the best acoustic-electric guitar electronics on the market. They recently teamed up again to create the Matrix VT Enhance NT2 pickup system that you’ll find in the GPCE Black Walnut. This system consists of Fishman’s popular Matrix under-saddle pickup and a new Enhance element that can be blended into the signal separately via the soundhole-mounted controls. The Enhance function lets the natural sounds of the guitar come through, which is ideal for players using techniques such as body tapping.
